Costa Rica
December 27, 2023 - January 4, 2024
Members of SD Girls in STEAM went to Costa Rica, where they dedicated their time to assisting local children in the rural town of Corozalito. Their efforts included teaching English to the children, providing essential school supplies as donations, renovating the school, helped restore the environment, and protected the sea turtles.
Fundraiser Casa de Amistad
November 11, 2023
Members of SD Girls in STEAM collaborated with local San Diego Youth Groups: Hope4Kids club at the Bishop’s School, C.A.R.T Youth Foundation from C.A.R.T. FTC #23280 and Stars Youth Club from Xing Jian Dance Studio to hold a fundraiser for Casa de Amistad, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering underserved children and teens. We were able to raise over $11,000 in donations and garnered significant attention, receiving coverage on CBS TV news and making headlines in the local newspaper, La Jolla Light news.
UCSD Math Day
July 29, 2023
SD Girls in STEAM Club cooperated with UCSD Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM at UCSD) to host a half day of fun math activities including seminars, Q&A discussion, math games and UCSD campus tour this summer. The goal of this event was to foster community and inspire students especially the underserved girls in the math field.
Summer Virtual Math Camp
June 26 - July 19, 2023
SD Girls in STEAM Club worked with Casa de Amistad, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the education and character development of underserved children, teens, and their families, to do a four week math tutoring program during the summer for rising 6th-9th graders. Throughout the eight sessions, the tutors were able to help the students become more confident in their math skills and be ready for the new school year.
San Diego Refugee Tutoring Bike Day

It gave our refugee kids the chance to ride or learn how to ride in a safe environment with all kinds of interesting bikes. It never gets old watching kids pick up bikes of all shapes and sizes, cruise around and simply be kids. Making these memories together is joyous and fills our hearts with gratitude.
Women in Science Seminar
March 4, 2023
SD Girls in STEAM Club invited four female scientists from Mirati Therapeutics to present an overview of the company, explain how pharmaceuticals go about making drugs, the drug development process, and the career opportunities in this field. They also talked about their experiences as women in science, as well as the challenges they faced and how they overcame them.
